Tattoo aftercare in the Laredo heat
A tattoo is only as good as how it heals. Laredo sun, heat and sweat make the first few weeks matter even more. Always follow the specific instructions your artist gives you; this page covers the basics.
The first few days
Leave the wrap on for as long as you were told. Wash with clean hands, lukewarm water and a gentle fragrance-free soap, then pat dry with a clean paper towel. Apply a thin layer of the aftercare product you were told to use. Thin is the key word: the tattoo should not look greasy.
Sun, heat and sweat
Keep a new tattoo out of direct sun until it is fully healed. In Laredo that means loose clothing over it outdoors, and shade when you can find it. Heavy sweating can irritate a fresh tattoo, so rinse gently after workouts or long days outside. Once it is healed, sunscreen on your tattoos is the best way to keep the color and lines sharp for years.
Water
No pools, lakes, hot tubs or soaking baths until it is healed. Showers are fine; just do not let the tattoo sit under the water for long.
Peeling and itching
Light flaking and itching are normal around the end of the first week. Do not pick or scratch. If you notice spreading redness, heat, swelling or anything that looks infected, contact a doctor.
Healed and holding up
Linework and blackwork that stays sharp with good care.

Aftercare questions
How long does a tattoo take to heal?
The surface usually heals in two to four weeks. Deeper healing takes longer, so keep protecting it from sun.
Can I go swimming?
Not until it is fully healed. No pools, lakes or hot tubs.
Should I use sunscreen on a new tattoo?
Cover a fresh tattoo with clothing instead. Once it is healed, use sunscreen to protect it.
What if it looks infected?
Contact a doctor if you see spreading redness, swelling, heat or discharge.
